Snowdrop Sundays
Bank Hall Bretherton

12-4pm Adults £2.50, Children FREE
Bank Hall is now celebrating its 400th Anniversary! The original part of the present building was built in 1608.
Since the Bank Hall Action Group formed they have cleared the grounds of years of neglect and overgrowth. The first task was to clear the once beautiful kept lawns and trees that where now over grown and surrounding the building like 'Sleeping Beauty's Castle' with just the Tower showing.

The group set to work clearing around the house and the walled garden so that a security fence could be erected and open spaces cleared for the use of events to raise funds. One year after clearing parts of the grounds some small shoots started to appear all over the areas cleared in February the little white petals appeared of the now famous 'Bank Hall Snowdrops'.

Over the next year or so even more of the grounds where cleared and the following spring more snowdrops appeared and formed the carpets that once covered the grounds. The Snowdrops had been lay dormant with little light for many years but had the chance to cross pollinate and provide extra hybrid specimens of snowdrop. A member of the Action Group noticed this and it was then decided that they would like to share the spectacular views with the public so the Bank Hall Gardens opened for every Sunday through out February.

APPLEBY HORSE FAIR 2007
'The Romany horse fair at Appleby is the largest and most important in the history of travellers' gatherings in England, dating back to 1685, when James II granted a charter granting the right to hold one there, on a site 'near to the River Eden'. Since that time, in the month of June, travellers have converged on Appleby, not just from England, but from Scotland, Wales and Ireland too. They gather in caravans and vardos on Fair Hill, to celebrate their history, music, folklore and family relationships, but most importantly to trade and barter in livestock.
