Imaging Everest: The Serpa's Tale

On Sat 9th June 2007 the "Imaging Everest: The Serpa's Tale" exhibition opened at the South Ribble Museum, Leyland. On Sat 29th Sep it ended. David Hunt, the museum curator, wanted to mark the end of the exhibition with an event and many people were invited along to hear and share memories of the Himalayan region of Nepal. Radio Lancashire came along and did a live broadcast as part of their Joe Wilson breakfast radio programme. As I had visited the Everest region in 1985 David asked me to come along to contribute to the morning’s discussions. Just after 8am Sarah Walby, Radio Lancashire’s roving reporter, arrived with her vehicle and telescopic aerial. The surrounding trees caused a bit of a problem for the aerial and the vehicle had to be moved around to avoid the branches. Two live broadcasts were made from the museum; the first at 8:25am when I was interviewed, then another at 8:50am when David was interviewed. This was good publicity as it meant that even more people could be invited ‘on air’ to the official closing at 11am.

I returned at 11 to hear the wonderful news that George Band, the youngest member of the successful 1953 Everest expedition, would be able to do a live phone in discussion at 12 noon. George was busy doing lectures in the Cumbria region but was able to spare a few minutes to talk over the phone. We were also pleased to see that South Ribble’s mayor, Councillor Kath Beattie, was able to attend. After a short presentation by David and me, David set up a conferencing phone so when he telephoned George Band somewhere in Cumbria we were all able to speak directly to George and hear the replies.

For over 30 minutes we were able to ask George questions and hear full and fascinating replies to all of them. The audience were mesmerised by the complex tale of how the news of the successful ascent by Ed Hillary and Tensing Norgay was transmitted back to London just in time for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953. An intricate coding system had to be used so that only London knew the correct message, and it worked. A great morning was had by all.

We had a marvellous start to our new season with a whopping increase in membership. On our first night alone we had 19 new members turn up, with a further 1/2 dozen the following week.
I'd like to warmly welcome all our new members - I'm sure that you will really enjoy coming to our club meetings.
If you have any queries or would like any advice do not hesitate to ask any of the committee. They will be only too pleased to help.

Happy snapping

Society outing to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,
Preston England Temple. Which is actually in Chorley.

We arrived just after sunset and had an interesting time taking photos in the changing light conditions as the daylight faded and the floodlights took over.

On Monday 6th Aug 2007 we visited Lytham and its wonderful Windmill. Some incredible skies helped to give an ever changing backdrop to the scenery.

Photography outing to Croston.

Our photo outing was to Croston. Originally we had hoped to get access to the parish Church bell tower but that couldn’t be arranged. We hoped to get access to the Church interior but after trying all the doors found them locked. After debating alternative photo subjects a man arrived who turned out to be one of the bell ringers and was just opening up for practice. We were in luck, he let us in to take our photos.
The church, which is dedicated to St Michael, dates back to at least 1075. The famous historian Pevsner said of it "a very strange building ... nothing seems quite right."
At one time it administered Chorley, at a time when Croston was the main centre in this part of Lancashire.

Photography outing to Worden Park, Leyland.
Heavy rain and dark clouds through most of the day didn't deter the hardy group of members who turned up. The rain had stopped but the dark clouds still hung around. It was still very pleasant and we were fortunate to have Chiarn with us to brighten the surroundings.

5th March 2007 More information has come in about the hoax.
February’s edition of the Amateur Photographer has the whole story; which you might like to read:

http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/news/No10_petition_fuels_photo_rights_confusion_news_110568.html

Google for “petition photography restrictions” and it soon becomes obvious that firstly, there’s no truth in the rumour and secondly, an awful lot of people have been taken in by it.
Thanks to Glyn Davies for sorting it out.
Gordon Jenkins has some more information on the comments below, which I have received from two separate sources.

Gordon has asked me to include the following url.

Sorry about announcing this before but it has turned out to be a hoax.
There are a number of moves promoting the requirement of 'ID' cards to allow photographers to operate in a public place. It is a fundamental right of a UK citizen to use a camera in a public place, indeed there is no right to privacy when in a public place. These moves have developed from paranoia and only promote suspicion towards genuine people following their hobby or profession. Don't stand by and do nothing, sign the on-line petition here:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/photography    Don't take any notice of this!!
